11th Annual Twelfth Night Gala January 9, 2010
A wonderful evening was has by all as Chatham Baroque welcomed guests to a marvelous evening featuring the Musicians of Chatham Baroque. Guests wandered throughout Freehof Hall, bidding on Silent Auction items and tasting delectable treats presented by The Culinary Artists. Desserts were provided by "by Dozen." Chatham Baroque delighted guests with two performances during the evening in Aaron Courtyard Hall.
Chatham Baroque, western Pennsylvania’s only professional Baroque ensemble playing on period instruments, continues to excite audiences with their dazzling technique and artful interpretations. in recent years, Chatham Baroque has taken its internationally renowned concert and education programs to Montreal, Toronto, Mexico City, and the British Virgin islands, as well as twenty-seven U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
Chatham Baroque’s live performances have been recorded and broadcast on NPR’s Performance Today, Harmonia, and Sunday Baroque, generating calls and e-mails from Virginia to Montana, and hawaii to
Denmark. The Chicago Tribune recently called Chatham Baroque “a splendid period instruments ensemble” and applauded its, “charming and vivacious program of 17th- [and] 18th century Spanish and latin American music,” while the Washington Post labeled the trio as “musically impeccable.”
At home, Chatham Baroque has been listed repeatedly among the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s “Top 50 Cultural forces in Pittsburgh,” and is regularly listed among the “Ten Best Classical Performances” each year. Chatham Baroque has worked on many collaborative projects with other Pittsburgh-area ensembles and organizations, including four fully-staged Baroque opera productions with the Pittsburgh Opera Center.
Chatham Baroque has released seven best-selling CDs on Dorian Records to critical acclaim. Both The Scotch Humour and Henry Purcell: Sonatas and Theatre Music received five-star ratings from Europe’s Goldberg magazine. Sweet Desire, its newest CD on the Dorian label, includes selected sonatas from the 17th-century Austro-italian collection Prothimia Suavissima. The ensemble is looking forward to a 2010 CD release of music by the seventeenth-century italian composer and lutenist, giovanni girolamo Kapsperger, which was recorded in Pittsburgh in April of 2009.
Each season Chatham Baroque performs 16 Peanut Butter & Jam Sessions for preschoolers, September through April, as well as a variety of community-outreach concerts in creative and nontraditional venues
across the region. Chatham Baroque is Ensemble-in-Residence at wQEDfM
and Calvary Episcopal Church.
