5th Annual Our Lady of the Wayside's 2009 Starlight Guardian Humanitarian Award
Friends and clients of Our Lady of the Wayside gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of Gary Bauman, a Parent/Advocate for Our Lady of the Wayside and Chairman of the Endowment Board and the accomplishments of legendary Cleveland Browns Hall off Fame Running Back and Amer-I-Can founder, Jim Brown. The 3rd Battalion, 25th Division of the US Marine Corps presented the colors while Ms. Danielle Danburg led the guests in singing the National Anthem. Emcee Bill Wills introduced Mr. Terry Davis, CEO and President of Our Lady of the Wayside and Mr. Tim Connor, President of the Shamrock Companies, for welcoming remarks.
Stirring and emotional video tributes to Mr. Bauman and Mr. Brown demonstrated the affection that family members and friends of Our Lady of the Wayside are held by the organization. The presentation of the handcrafted awards for Mr. Bauman and Mr. Brown were made by Mr. Davis and close friends of the two men. A tradition of this organization is the inclusion of their clients, really the family of Our Lady of the Wayside, in their celebrations. When asked about the outcomes of the celebration, Chairman of the Board Michael Jeans said, " We hope to make new friends and drive more opportunities to our residents in these tough, economic times." Mr. Davis stated that there are currently 44 homes in 29 communities in Lorain and Cuyahoga counties that serve more than 300 people. Mr. Bauman was able to share his personal experience of the transition he had seen during the years he was associated with Our Lady of the Wayside. His odyssey began with his daughter entering the resident program at a young age into a group home. This evolved for the remaining years of her life to her assuming a family style residency with three friends in a lovely community. This symbolizes the achievements of this organization and the powerful message of advocacy that they carry to the communities they serve.
Our Lady of the Wayside enriches the lives of individuals who have mental retardation and developmental disabilities. They provide individuals and their families pathways to healthy and productive personal growth through professional care and guidance. Our Lady of the Wayside is a non-denominational, non-profit organization serving individuals in Cuyahoga and Lorain counties.
